Website Updating
Tip #13
A web publication of Content That Counts

I'll link to yours if you'll link to mine.

Linking, or hyperlinks, are the substance of the web. When using the web, people read quickly looking for just the right information. If you plan your website well, you can tempt a visitor to hang around a little longer. The way to do this is to give just enough information to make the reader want more. To get more, the visitor has to click on a link.

Your links can take a visitor more deeply into your website or you can bring another website to them. By using "target" windows you can take your visitor to another website without leaving your own. When finished with the other website, your visitor is still on yours.

Having links to other websites is good for web traffic. There are many government websites with information relevant to your visitors. Providing a link to that information boosts your value.

Include links to websites that will include a link to your. By trading links with customers, colleagues or business associates helps both of you. Having links is a great way to increase the information you have on your website, without having to do the updating. However, make sure your linked sites are updating their information. Stale information doesn't help anyone.

There is one more important benefit for linking to other websites. Search engines send out spiders to look for websites they haven't catalogued. The spiders go from site to site looking for new websites. You may find your website getting better search results due to mutual linking.

Your website is a communications and marketing tool. Linking helps build your presence on the web. Using available information by linking to other websites gives you interesting content that boosts your image. So, get linking.
